Subject: Legislative Requirement for IP Majors - INTA 1200

Seats are open in a unique course designed for International Plan students.  This course meets the Legislative/History Requirement for all majors.  Please share this option with your International Plan students!

IP/INTA 1200: American Government in Comparative and Global Perspective

This course, which fulfills the American History and American Government requirement, is designed specifically to the interests and needs of the IP students across all majors. The course provides an added value that while studying U.S. government in comparative and global perspective, the organizational and thematic content of the course encompasses some of the core learning outcomes of the International Plan such as: gaining comparative, global knowledge about the world’s socio-political systems and cultures of other countries and world regions and introducing and applying the key concepts of intercultural sensitivity and an ethno-relative worldview structure.

Additional benefits of the course from an institutional perspective include offering the only opportunity for IP students from multiple disciplines to enroll in the same course intended to help them acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to make the most of their unique IP experience.  As the course will be exclusively for IP students, it serves as a convenient and appropriate vehicle for administering pre-departure cross-cultural competence assessments as well as for efficient, comprehensive delivery of information pertaining to the vast array of curricular, work and study abroad opportunities that Tech has to offer to help students plan their specific IP trajectory.  The main purpose of the course is to present students with a sustained and rigorous approach to intercultural learning concepts as they apply to understanding how the U.S. political system works, how it is similar or different from other polities, and how globalization impacts the role and power of the United States and its interaction with other societies through commerce, trade and multilateral organizations as well as educational and cultural exchanges.

Dr. Vicki Birchfield, Associate Professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, will be the instructor of record for the course. She brings seven years of experience directing GT’s study abroad program on the European Union and Transatlantic Relations, teaching courses on comparative politics, globalization and offering team-taught courses in the language-across-the-curriculum program, instructed entirely in French on topics of European and global affairs.

This course will be taught FALL 2008.

Subject: Pre-Health Advising for FASET

As we get ready for FASET, I wanted to point out that I will do Pre-Health Advising (med/dental/pharmacy/etc.) on the second day of each FASET session at 2pm in room 319 of the Student Center.  It's on the FASET schedule, but if you could remind your pre-health students that you advise, that would be great!

We have almost 300 incoming freshmen that are pre-health, covering just about every major!  Successful applicants to health profession schools start working towards their goals during their freshmen year.

Thanks for your assistance,
Jennifer

Subject: Fall Registration for CS intro courses

Note from CS regarding Fall FASET Registration

The College of Computing is anticipating a high demand for seats in freshman CS courses this fall.   There is the possibility of not being able to accommodate all students into CS 1301 and CS 1371.  To be proactive we have created measures to make sure that the necessary majors will be able to have first opportunity to register for the CS course.  We are placing restrictions and giving priority for majors who have scheduled the computing course in the first semester of the freshman year.

However, if you have the introductory computing course listed first year fall in your curriculum but it is not an absolute necessity for them to take the first term then please let Cathy Dunnahoo know by calling her at 404-894-9638 as soon as possible.  Letting us know this information will open more seats for students who absolutely need it first term.

If you did not have CS 1371, CS 1301 and CS 1315 listed to be taken the first year fall term in your major curriculum then your students will not be permitted into the course during the early registration period.  However, please note that restrictions will be lifted on August 15 and this will allow all students regardless of major a chance to register for any remaining seats.

Any questions or concerns please contact one of our advisors – Kathy Earwood 5-6518 or Cathy Dunnahoo at 4-9638.

Thank you.

Subject: Freshmen Social Science Options

Fall freshmen will have the option of signing up for a variety of core courses. One option for satisfying a social science elective and the constitution/history requirement is POL 1101, Government of the US.

Prospective students should be aware that POL 1101 at Georgia Tech differs substantially from previous courses they might have taken in high school civics or US government. The focus in this course is on combining social science knowledge about government with practical information about how public policies are made, how they affect our careers and lives, and how citizens and professionals can take an active role in shaping government decisions.

Both sections for Fall 2008 will include exercises in which students will participate in shaping, discussing, and recommending policies in areas such as energy and environment, transportation, civil rights, national competitiveness, communications and information, and education. These activities will provide hands-on learning about leadership and cooperation, analysis of complex issues, and the design of workable solutions.

And the 2008 campaign and election might be mentioned once or twice!

Subject: Summer Precalculus FAQ

Good evening,

Summer freshmen who scored 640 or lower on the math SAT exam were preregistered in MATH 1113 today.  We strongly encourage these students to stay in the summer precalculus refresher course to better prepare them for MATH 1501, 1711 or 1712.

Please note that there is a new procedure for dropping precalculus. A student no longer needs an approval from the School of Mathematics or the instructor to drop precalculus.  If a student wishes to drop the class, he or she must contact Jeremy Gray in the Registrar's Office.

For more information, see the 1113 FAQ page at www.newstudents.gatech.edu/plugins/content/index.php?id=15 .

I will be out of the office on June 5-19.  If you have questions about math courses for FASET students, please e-mail math.faset@math.gatech.edu .  If you have other math questions, please e-mail ugcomments@math.gatech.edu .

Subject: Gimbel presentation about Singapore staff exchange

Dear Colleagues:

The GT Office of International Education sent me to Singapore during spring break to learn about the higher education system in Singapore and the study abroad opportunities available to our students. Please join me to hear about my experiences in Singapore and learn more about participating in these types of staff abroad programs in the future. Please see Zeb Simpson's announcement of the event below. Hope to see you there!

- Nancy Gimbel

The Office of International Education invites you to learn more about Higher Education in Singapore

Brownbag Seminar

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 12:00noon

Piedmont Room, Student Center

Nancy Gimbel, Director of Undergraduate Programs in the College of Management, recently visited Singapore to learn more about the higher education system and to visit the three major universities that Georgia Tech has exchange agreements with in Singapore.  Please join us on Wednesday, May 21 at 12:00 noon in the Piedmont Room of the Student Center to hear about her experience.

Have you ever wondered what the higher education system is like in Singapore?

During this informative brownbag, Nancy will share with you what she learned about the university system in Singapore from her visits to Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, and Singapore Management University.

This visit was sponsored by the Office of International Education to provide an opportunity for Georgia Tech staff to learn more about our exchange partners in Singapore and strengthen the communication between staff that assist exchange students.

Each semester Georgia Tech sends hundreds of students to study abroad all over the world.  We also have the privilege of welcoming students from these distant places to study at Georgia Tech and learn more about the United States while they are here.  Bilateral exchange agreements, with highly ranked universities around the world, diversify our campus and contribute to differentiating Georgia Tech as a leading global university. Student exchanges also strengthen ties between universities and enable participants to gain an insight into different cultures and societies, as well as an opportunity to experience different attitudes and ideas.

We hope this brownbag will help you learn more about higher education in another part of the world as well as provide you with information about our student exchanges with Singapore.

Subject: Seeking Presenters & Judges

Dear advisors and student affairs professionals,

The Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, an organization for college, high school and middle school students considering studying business in college or pursuing business careers, is holding its annual conference in Atlanta this summer. They are seeking presenters and judges. I know many GT staff have strong public speaking skills and expertise in some of the areas for which they’re seeking presenters, so I thought I’d share this with you.

They are seeking presenters who can focus on the following topics: Business (i.e. Business Relationships/Ethics, Entrepreneurship), Communications, Leadership, Information Technology, Career Development, and Finance. I know many of you have presented on these topics. If you are interested in submitting a workshop proposal, check out the conference information at:

http://fbla-pbl.org/web/page/712/sectionid/554/pagelevel/1/main_interior.asp

You’ll see at the bottom of that webpage there is a section called “forms and documents”. You’ll see documents called “Workshop Presenters Form” and “Judge Request Form”. You can use these forms to propose a workshop OR request to be a judge for one of the many competitions that occur during the conference.  I also have some additional information on the conference and the events. Just let me know if you’re interested and I’ll forward you the information I received from the conference coordinator.

They need to secure about 550 judges and about 50 workshop presenters.

We have revised the math permit and overload information page at http://www.math.gatech.edu/overloads/ .  There are separate links to the summer and fall semesters.  All overload and permit requests must be submitted on the OSCAR permit request system.  Please refer students to our information page for instructions and guidelines in requesting math overloads and permits.  During early registration, we will stop accepting requests two days before the end of the registration period.

Please note that because we receive hundreds of permit and overload requests during each registration phase, we don't have time to deal with individual students.  We would really appreciate your help in not telling students to contact our  instructors, the math staff, or me.

Thanks,
Rena Brakebill and the Math Permit Team

Listening Skills (Category 2 Elective)
Instructor: Anita Hope
Savant Building  Room  203
8:30 am - 12:30 pm
Cost: $100
We use "listening" more often than any other communication skill.  Yet, most of us have never had any formal training in "listening."  This program begins with a listening test, which helps participants evaluate their current level of effectiveness.  A "barriers to listening" exercise then reveals the nine mistakes people make most often in the communication process.  The remainder of the class focuses on strategies for eliminating those barriers and improving our communication effectiveness through better listening.  Attendees will practice techniques that help in avoiding conflict and misunderstanding such as: paraphrasing to clarify expectations, constructive evaluation, and empathetic responding.  Participants leave with a specific plan of action for applying the techniques taught in the program.
